Fewer French joining jihadists in Iraq and Syria

During the first half of the year, 18 people left France to join the Islamic State group (IS) in Iraq and Syria, compared with 69 during the same period last year, French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on Tuesday. The decrease is due to recent defeats suffered by IS and by "enhanced anti-terrorism efforts", Cazeneuve said. According to official figures, 689 French citizens, including 275 women, are in the region.
