Air pollution caused 200,000 EU deaths in 2013

A World Bank Group report said Thursday air pollution has become an important cause of death worldwide, especially in poor countries. Europe has seen significant improvement since 1990, when 361,096 people died in countries now in the EU. The 2013 EU death toll as a result of air pollution, 231,554, is 35% lower. Greece is the only EU country where air pollution deaths went up, from 7,742 to 8,320.

EU Modernisation Fund: an open door for fossil gas in Romania

Among the largest sources of financing for energy transition of central and eastern European countries, the €60bn Modernisation Fund remains far from the public eye. And perhaps that's one reason it is often used for financing fossil gas projects.

'Swiftly dial back' interest rates, ECB told

Italian central banker Piero Cipollone in his first monetary policy speech since joining the ECB's board in November, said that the bank should be ready to "swiftly dial back our restrictive monetary policy stance."
