Germany could extend border controls

German interior minister Thomas De Maiziere said on Wednesday that he favoured prolonging border controls for six months when the measures end in mid-November "if things stay as they are today". But he said that "the time has not yet come to decide". Border controls were first introduced in September 2015 when thousands of migrants arrived, and the EU commission has since authorised them until November.

EU nationals in the UK could get almost the same rights as British people after Brexit, but an EU deal might not happen, the British government has said.

EU approves rescue of Italian banks

The European Commission gave the green light to a €17-billion plan by the Italian government to save Banca Popolare di Vicenza and Veneto Banca.
