Socialist Pittella bids for EU parliament's top job

The leader of the European Parliament's socialist group, Gianni Pittella, has joined the race to become the institution's next president. The Italian lawmaker announced his bid to succeed Martin Schulz at a press conference and said he would run on an anti-austerity agenda. MEPs will elect their next president in a secret ballot on 17 January next year.

Italian central banker Piero Cipollone in his first monetary policy speech since joining the ECB's board in November, said that the bank should be ready to "swiftly dial back our restrictive monetary policy stance."
