Spain to command anti-smuggler Mediterranean force

As of September, Spain will be in command of the EU's Operation Sophia, which fights human smuggling in the Mediterranean, diplomatic and military sources have confirmed, according to Spanish daily El Pais. Italy, in charge of the operation since its launch in 2015, had asked all 25 participating countries to contribute a command ship. Spain was the only country that responded to the request.
