EU frets over hard border in Ireland

The European Commission believes it is "essential" for the UK to retain some 100 EU customs union and internal market laws to prevent the creation of a hard border in Ireland - jeopardising the peace agreement - according to a leaked EU paper seen by the Daily Telegraph. The position would mean either keeping the rules for all the UK, or granting Northern Ireland a new special status.
