Spanish police begin to leave Catalonia

The Spanish government has begun its withdrawal of several thousands of police officers from the northeastern region of Catalonia, it announced on Tuesday. The police were dispatched there after the Catalan referendum on independence, which had been deemed illegal by Spain's highest court, but the deadlock between Barcelona and Madrid continues after last week's elections gave a majority of regional seats to separatist parties.
