EU Commission to 'define' rule of law role in budget

EU justice commissioner Vera Jourova said Wednesday that she would put forward a definition of rule of law within the context of the next EU budget after some countries have called for EU funds to be linked with judicial independece. "It should not be understood as punishment of some countries," Jourova said. The issue emerged as rule of law concerns grew in two recepients of EU funds, Poland and Hungary.
