Merkel defends accepting UN refugees

German chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday defended moves by her government to accept 10,000 people designated as refugees by the United Nations refugee agency. Merkel said the UN program helps stem irregular migration and curb trafficking. "Our goal is to prevent illegal migration and to replace it with legal migration," she told reporters.
