Macron to seek clarity in Putin phone call

French president Emmanuel Macron planned to speak with Russian president Vladimir Putin by phone on Friday to "obtain clarifications" about his intentions on Ukraine, Macron said while meeting German chancellor Olaf Scholz onTuesday. "Ukraine knows it can rely on Germany," Scholz also said, while promising to put pressure on Russia to keep transiting Russian gas exports to Europe via Ukraine's pipeline network.

Orbán's new state of emergency under fire

Hungary's premier Viktor Orbán declared a state of emergency due to the war in neighbouring Ukraine hours after pushing a constitutional amendment through parliament, where two-thirds of MPs are controlled by his Fidesz party, allowing his government special powers.
