EU to get its own motto

"United in its diversity" should be the motto for the European Union, feels Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who drew up the draft European constitution signed off by EU leaders at the Thessaloniki Summit on 20 June.
The phrase was deliberately hilighted by quotation marks in the text.

"We thought yes it might be a good motto for Europe," said Mr Giscard who went on to say that the Constitution was a "synthesis of views".
The motto could be fitting for a Union that straddles a multitude of cultures, languages, traditions and politics - which do not necessarily always work in harmony.
The Union already has a flag with 12 golden stars on a blue background and an anthem - Beethoven's Ode to Joy.
