Commission to water down controversial services directive

The European Commission is to reshuffle crucial parts of a proposed bill on opening up the EU’s market in services.

Commission President José Manuel Barroso has ordered Commission officials to help dismantle parts of the Services directive, after the EU executive discussed its future during a meeting on Wednesday (2 March), the Financial Times reports.

The move follows strong opposition towards the directive by France and Germany and numerous critics in the European Parliament.
