Brussels outlines plan for EU technology institute

The European Commission on Wednesday unveiled plans to set up a European Institute of Technology (EIT) with the aim of rivalling top academic institutions in the US.

According to the plans, the institute should be made up of a "light-weight central governing body," represented by top scientists and business leaders, and up to ten "knowledge communities."
