This week the European Commission is set to make public it proposals on cutting car emissions after divisions within the college itself and hard lobbying by the car industry caused the project to be delayed twice.
With the spat now very much in the public arena, Brussels will be watched with interest to see if it imposes mandatory measures on car makers to reduce CO2 emissions and to what extent.
