Wales must reinvent self in face of enlargement

Like many poorer EU regions, enlargement of the European Union will mean less EU money for Wales. It is also likely to mean loss of jobs, as investment in Wales moves eastwards, where labour costs are cheaper.

But Rhodri Morgan, first minister for Wales, is keen to minimise the impact that taking on board ten new Member States next May will have for the region.

"We must make sure that the creation of new jobs is as much in parallel as possible with the disappearance of the old one...
