EU court advisor says Swedish alcohol monopoly is legal

EUOBSERVER / Brussels - Sweden's tough line on alcohol has received support from a top EU court advisor who suggests that Sweden's ban on private import of alcohol is legal under European Union law.

Under Swedish law, private individuals are prohibited from importing alcohol from other member states – unless they transport it personally - as the Swedish state holds an import monopoly through the alcohol retailer Systembolaget.
