Attack on UN headquarters in Baghdad condemned

UN envoy in Iraq since June Sergio Vieira de Mello and at least 19 people were killed when the UN headquarters in Baghdad was bombed on Tuesday.

The EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana has strongly condemned the attack and expressed sympathy to the relatives of the victims and to the United Nations and its staff.

"The EU strongly supports the UN's important ongoing role in the reconstruction of Iraq", Mr Solana said in a statement.
