France makes Macedonia status conditional on budget deal

France will only approve EU candidate status for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia if EU leaders reach a deal over the bloc's 2007-2013 budget at the summit on Thursday (15 December) and Friday.

Diplomats told EUobserver that member state ambassadors on Wednesday (13 December) agreed on a text which would grant formal EU candidate status to Macedonia, necessary for the country to start accession talks with the EU.
