A local election in Turkey’s eastern province of Siirt, 60 miles from Turkey's border with Iraq, has cleared the way for Recep Tayyip Erdogan to become the new prime minister of his country.
Mr Erdogan chairs the governing Justice and Development party, (AKP) but was not able to enter the parliament in last November's election because of a previous conviction for inciting religious hatred.
