'Ever closer Union' to be dropped in constitution

The reference to an 'ever closer union' is to be dropped from the draft constitution on a future Europe, reports the Times. The first sixteen articles of this treaty will be presented this afternoon.

This mention of an 'ever closer union' was often seized upon by eurosceptics as evidence that the European Union would eventually evolve into a fully fledged state. The article is expected to be replaced by a more general commitment to a secure and prosperous future for member states.
