Albania takes first step towards EU membership

Negotiations on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement between the European Union and Albania have been formally opened, the first step towards EU membership.

After 12 months of discussions, the President of the Commission, Romano Prodi, speaking in Tirana, announced that the two sides had agreed that the first round of talks would begin on 13 February.
