Marlboro man to cough up a billion

It has been confirmed that tobacco giant Philip Morris – the producers of Marlboro cigarettes - is willing to pay the European Commission one billion dollars to stop legal action against them.

Commission officials yesterday confirmed that talks with the company were taking place, however the deal will need the approval of 10 of the EU’s member states.

In 2001 the Brussels executive started legal proceedings against the firm for complicity in smuggling.
