Iris scanning in European passports being prepared

As early as 2005 traditional European passports could be replaced by a new set of identification measures including biometric information (fingerprints, iris scans or DNA).

The European Commission was tasked by the Thessaloniki European Council in June to "prepare the appropriate proposals, starting with visas".

When EU justice and home affairs ministers meet informally in Rome 12 September the issue is expected to feature high on the agenda.
