Hungary is planning to hold a referendum on EU membership in March 2003. This was confirmed by the permanent secretary for EU affairs in the Hungarian foreign ministry, Peter Balazs, speaking to German paper Handelsblatt.
Other candidate countries are pressuring the Hungarians to act as the draught horse for their referenda as around 80 per cent of the Hungarians are believed to support EU membership, the secretary explained.
