Georgia’s 'velvet revolution' eases worries

The EU has welcomed the resignation of President Eduard Shevardnadze and is calling on Georgians to put their faith in the ballot box.

"The decision of President Shevardnadze opens the way to restoration of constitutional law and order in Georgia", reads a statement from Brussels.

Mr Shevardnaze resigned on Sunday after an ultimatum from opposition leaders and following days of street protests which culminated in the storming of Parliament.
