France and Germany agreed yesterday to a US request to write off a large part of Iraq's 120 billion dollar debt.
US special envoy James Baker secured the agreement after meeting French President Jacques Chirac in Paris and German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in Berlin.
The French and German generosity came despite anger from both countries at being excluded from being able to bid for billions of euros worth of reconstruction contracts in war-torn Iraq.
