Turkey plays a role in top Socialist job

A political scuffle is going on behind the scenes for the top job of leader of the European Socialists.

The two contenders to replace the UK's Robin Cook are former Danish prime minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and Italian Giuliano Amato.

But it was not always so.

Mr Amato had been expected to take the job easily but the French Socialists have upset the apple-cart by throwing their weight behind Mr Rasmussen.
