EU parliament chief defends presidency stitch-up

European Parliament president Josep Borrell has defended the power stitch-up between the assembly's two biggest political groups on the presidency of the institution as a "practical solution."

The back-room agreement between his fellow socialists and the centre-right EPP brought him – a first-time MEP - to power in 2004 and is likely to result in German centre-right MEP Hans-Gert Poettering taking over at the half-way stage in January.
