Prodi: People should elect Commission president

In the future the President of the European Commission should be elected directly by Europe's citizens, according to current Commission chief Romano Prodi.

Mr Prodi's comments come less than a week after member states agreed to name Portuguese Prime Minister José Manuel Durao Barroso as his successor.

The decision came after months of acrimonious wrangling and behind-the-scenes negotiations.
