More tough talks ahead for German finance minister

Returning to Berlin after Tuesday’s historic euro pact battle in Brussels, the German finance minister Hans Eichel now faces new rounds of tough talks on the German 2004 budget.

The German Parliament - the Bundestag - is set to adopt by Friday (28 November) the German budget for 2004.

The draft budget for 2004 equates to about 250 bn euro, of which 43.4 bn will be funded from new borrowing. Before yesterday morning, this would have landed Mr Eichel in hot water with the Commission...
