Less UK influence in EU without euro

British prime minister Tony Blair admitted on Thursday that UK influence in Europe could diminish if it decides not to join the single currency for political rather than economic reasons.

It would be good for Britain to join a successful euro, said Mr Blair according to the Financial Times but stressed that the five economic tests that his government has laid down for joining the EMU would have to be met.
