Italy wants its soldiers in Libya, but no deal yet

Italy is close to signing a deal with Libya, allowing it to send Italian troops to Tripoli to fight against illegal immigration, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said yesterday.

Speaking to the Senate in Rome, Mr Berlusconi said this deal foresees sending Italian soldiers to control Libyan ports and borders. The deal would also authorise Italian ships to patrol in Libyan waters.

"A deal with Tunisia is also at an advanced stage," Mr Berlusconi added.
