EU annouces overhaul of sugar subsidies

EU agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel announced a sharp review of the EU’s nearly 40-year-old sugar regime on Wednesday (22 June) that is set to spark a fight among all 25 member states and trade partners abroad.

"There is no alternative to a profound reform. The easy option would be to sit on my hands but that would mean a slow and painful death for the European sugar sector," Mrs Fischer Boel said in a statement at the launch of the reform proposal.
