EU rewards Egypt's strongman Sisi with cash and access

Egypt’s strongman president Abdel Fattah el Sisi is the latest authoritarian leader to be embraced as a close friend of the EU. At a summit in Brussels on Wednesday (22 October), the EU Commission rolled out the red carpet for him, offering cash and membership of the bloc’s lucrative Horizon Europe research programme.
