China plays hardball on textiles

EUOBSERVER/BRUSSELS: The Chinese government announced on Monday (30 May) that it is scrapping its self-proposed export tariffs on all 81 textile product lines.

The move comes in response to the European Commission's decision before the weekend to proceed with emergency formal consultations with China, which corresponds to step one of its textile safeguard activation guidelines.

The commission greeted Beijing’s move with surprise.
