The Party of European Socialists has elected former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen as its next president.
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen was prime minister of Denmark from 1993 to 2001 and succeeds Robin Cook in the top post for the European Socialists.
Mr Rasmussen was narrowly elected into the position at a party Congress in Brussels over the weekend. He gained 163 votes while former Italian premier Giuliano Amato, came in a close second with 157 votes.
