Irish political leaders call on yes to Nice Treaty

The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister), Mr Ahern, and other party leaders campaigning in favour of the Nice referendum in their final press conferences before the election tomorrow urged voters to say Yes to enlargement of the EU.

The Taoiseach said the Nice Treaty was about extending the benefits of EU membership to other countries which were ready to join so that Europe did not always remain divided as a legacy of the Cold War, reports the Irish Times.

The Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, also sought to diffuse fears that a vote for Nice was a vote for NATO by insisting that Irish neutrality would be fully maintained, reports the Irish Examiner. He pointed to Sweden’s approval of the Nice Treaty and how it has been neutral for 200 years.

The Labour Party leader, Mr Ruairí Quinn, criticised the Taoiseach for the way the campaign had been handled and said he did not believe the Irish people wished to wake up on Friday morning to meet the disappointment and devastation in central and Eastern Europe that would accompany a No vote.
